Our Owner

Matt Yates obtained his degree in Music Education and trombone performance from Randy Kohlenberg at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. During his first year of college, he began an apprenticeship with John Blythe at a repair shop in Burlington, NC. After his two-year apprenticeship, he continued to work as a technician at the shop while finishing his music degree.

Upon graduation in 2001, Matt began a career as a middle school and high school band director while continuing to work as a repair technician at nights and on weekends, eventually leaving the shop to focus on his teaching career.

The Start of Hill City Music

Matt worked as a middle and high school band director for eight years before opening Hill City Music Repair in Lynchburg, Virginia. Hill City Music Repair quickly became a primary provider of instrument repair services in Central Virginia.

After a few years, Hill City Music Repair was expanded and services were added. The business moved to a larger location allowing for a larger retail space, a bigger shop, and more rooms for lessons. In 2014, “repair” was dropped from the name, and the Hill City Music of today was formed. Through growth, and a partnership with Music & Arts, Hill City Music now offers sales and rentals of all major brands of band and orchestra instruments.

To better serve our customers, Matt purchased a beloved music repair shop, Valley Repair, in Roanoke Virginia and opened our first satellite location in Roanoke in 2022.

We strive to provide the best, most knowledgeable and customer friendly service in our industry. Our instrument repair technicians have decades of experience working with brass, woodwinds, luthier services and percussion. We are proud to serve the Central Virginia music community and look forward to doing so for years to come.
