Matt Yates, Hill City Music Owner
Matt obtained his degree in Music Education and trombone performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. During his first year of college, he began an apprenticeship with John Blythe at a repair shop in Burlington, NC. After his two year apprenticeship, he continued to work as a brass technician at the shop while finishing his music degree.
Upon graduation in 2001, Matt began a career as a middle school and high school band director while continuing to work as a repair technician at nights and on weekends, eventually leaving the shop to focus on his teaching career.
After eight years as a public school band director, Matt opened Hill City Music Repair in Lynchburg, Virginia, with his father. Hill City Music Repair quickly became the premier provider of instrument repair services in central Virginia.
After a few years, Hill City Music Repair was expanded and services were added. A larger location allowed for the addition of more retail space for instruments and accessories. A larger shop was also need to accommodate the addition of two more technicians. Studios were added and lessons are now taught in by professional music teachers.
In 2014, “repair” was dropped from the name and the Hill City Music of today was formed. Through a partnership with Music & Arts, Hill City Music now offers sales and rentals of all major brands of band and orchestra instruments.
