Matt obtained his degree in Music Education and Trombone Performance studying under Dr. Randy Kohlenberg at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In 1997, he began a musical instrument repair apprenticeship, directly studying under John Blythe ("The Band Doc") at his repair shop in Burlington, NC. After his two-year apprenticeship, he continued to work as a technician at the shop while finishing his music degree.

Upon graduation in 2001, Matt began a career as a middle school and high school band director while continuing to work as a repair technician at nights and on weekends. After several years, he left The Band Doc to focus on his teaching career.

In 2009 he opened Hill City Music in Lynchburg, Virginia with the desire to provide high quality instrument repair services.

Matt continues to operate and grow the business on a daily basis. His desire is to grow the business to serve as many musicians as possible in central and southwest Virginia.

  • After opening Hill City Music Repair, it quickly became a primary provider of instrument repair services to a large number of middle and high schools in Central Virginia.
